In 1981, Asdon Viilla intervened in Liverpools domination of English football by winning the League title. Liverpool, however regined suprmeme in Europe, after beating Real Madrid in the European cup final; and with Ipswich winning the UEFA cup, the Englsih remained the domnant force in club football in Europe. In Tennis, John McCenroe finally ended the Bjorn Borg era at Wimbledon, beating the Swede legend in a 4 set final. ? Also in the summer, Ian Botham almost single handedly won the Ashes back for England. In january, of the same year, Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu made his international debut for the Bangladesh Cricket team.
He was already a familiar name for the cricket lovers of Dhaka, after? some consistent scores in the Dhaka League over the previous 2/3 seasons. Based on these performances, the selectors included him in the BCCB XI for the 2 day match at Faridpur against the touring MCC side in ealry January 1981. Batting at no. 3 he scored 25. It was a brief but an entertaining innings. He didn't look comfortable outside his off stump, but it didn't stop him from going for his shots. Impressed by this performance, the selectors inlcuded him in the main national team for the 3 day matches at Chittagong and at Dhaka.
Struggle for Consistency (1982-83):? In Feb. 1982, Lipu played against the Hyderabad Blues side led by Chetan Chauhan. A year later, he played against Dilip Doshi's WB side. Sadly, he failed on both occassions. The Indian teams as usual depended heavily on their spinners, and included quality slow bowlers. The blues had the leg spinners Shukla and NarShimarao, while the WB had Doshi. Lipu, and for that matter, most of the Bangladeshi batsmen at the time, were not preapred to play such quality spin bowling. Even, Raqibul, our best batmsan, failed to do justice to his name. So, Lipu's failure against Shukla or Doshi, was disappointing, but not totally unexpected.
More disppointing perhaps was his failure in England, in the 2nd ICC trophy, in the summer of 1982. He started the tour well scoring heavlily in the practice matches, but after scoring 77 in the opening fixture of the ICC trophy (against West Africa), he completley lost his form, finishing the tournament with only 126 runs from 7 matches, at a modest average of 21. 00.
The big breakthrough (1983-1984) : In Dec. 1983, Lipu toured WB with the BCCB team. He didn't do very well there, but things would change dramatically in January. Lipu emerged as the most consistent performer in the 1st SEA cricket cup in Dhaka. In the double legged group stages? he scored 48 against HK, and 36* and 62 against the Bangladesh Tigers. burberry women shawl , Then, in the final, against HK, he scored a classy 40. His efforts would look even more impressive, if we consider the fact that the slow pitch of the Dhaka stadium made stroke making extremely diffcult. Instead of going for the big shots, the batsmen had to look for the pushes and the nudges for their runs. Lipu was amiong the very few batsmen in the tournament who succeded in adjusting their game properly.
In Feb. the Bangladesh team, led by Raqibul Hasan, toured Kenya. It turned out tp be a disaster for the tourists, as our batsmen failed miserably to cope with the extra pace and the bounce of the Nairobi wickets. Lipu, however, could held his head high. While he?failed in the one day matches, he looked lot better in the 2 and 3 day matches. Lipu's consistent performances, along with the retirement of Omar Khaled Rumy from the international scenes made Lipu the undisputed choice for the vital No. 3 position in the national team. He was now an important member of the national team. An even bigger duty was awaiting him in the following season. burberry womens shirts ,
The New Captain: In March, 1985, the full strength SL team, led by Dulleep Mendis, came to Dhaka on their way back home from a long tour of Australia. They played a 3 day match at Dhaka. Trhis drawn match marked the beginning of Lipu's career as the national team captain. The selectors, obviously gave a considerable thought before making their choice. Already, the team was passing through a transition period. All rounders Yousuf Babu and Omar Khlaed Rumy, plus WK cum batsman Shaifq ul Haq Hira had all bade fairwell to international cricket during the 1983-84 season. burberry shawl , In their place came a branch of talented but inexperinced players, like Nehal,Nannu, Nobel, Azhar, Atahar, Prince and others. Among the veterans only Raqibul and Badshah had remained. Raqibul still appeared to have a number of years ahead of him; but there had been a shift in our cricketing plans. Following India's historical truimph at Lord's in the summer of 1983, our cricketing focus was more based on limited over games. Raqibul, an opener in the Hanif Mohammad mould, was never suited for the limited version of the game. Indeed, he would retire after the 1986 ICC trophy in England. All rounder Jahangir Shah Badshah carried on until 1990, but he was never really interested in the captaincy.
In this changed scenario, Lipu emerged as the obvious choice. He also possessed considerable experience as a captain in the domestic arena. In 1983-84 season, he had led the Dhaka University side to the title in national cricket. Right at the beginning of the 84-85 season, he led Abahani to a thumping vicotry against the arch rivals Mohammedans in the final of the Damal Summer Cricket cup in Dhaka.
In January, Lipu successfully led the Dhaka University side and the U-25 side to two limited over vicotries against a touring NZ side. He was MoM in the first match, after scoring a fifty and taking 3 iwckets with his gentle off-breaks. With all these successes behind him, he took over the national team captaincy from Raqibul Hasan.
The 3 day match against SL saw the local team achieve a highly creditable draw. Most importantly, the new captain performed brilliantly, suggesting that he was under no extra pressure due to captaincy. In fact his 39 and 45 helped his team achieve the impressive resutl.
